Opioid-free TMJ pain and dysfunction treatment
Our mission is to provide the most conservative treatments to alleviate pain and dysfunction.
Our primary focus is the resolution of pain and dysfunction associated with the bite and jaw joints.
Services
Laser Photobiomodulation
Near Infrared light is FDA approved for the treatment of pain and inflammation. In use over 25 years in Europe and by every professional sports team and many university and athletics departments.
TENS
Transcutaneous Electric Neural Stimulation is effective device for relaxing muscles, reducing pain and therapeutic in determining a bite treatment position.
Manual Therapy
Our doctors are trained in a variety of manual treatment methodologies for TMJ related dysfunctions, including Trigger point, deep tissue, and TMJ disc reduction. These therapies are individualized depending on your treatment needs.
Fixed/removable dental orthotics
Chronic TMD and severe misaligned bites may require more than laser therapy alone for long-term success. We use a combination of therapies with fixed and removable appliances to orthopedically position the lower jaw in an ideal bite treatment position. These appliances hold the jaw and bite in a position that supports healthy jaw function.
Continuing care
Continuing care options are those described in our treatment services. In some cases, periodic laser or TENS treatments may be needed. Others may have contributing factors that must be managed by other medical and dental providers, physical therapists, chiropractors; etc.
Phase II
Once stable in a bite treatment position treatment options may include working with your general dentist in restorative cases, or orthodontic or reconstructive options with our providers.
Why Laser? What is Photobiomodulation?
Photobiomodulation (PBM) is the result of photochemical reactions in the body on molecular and cellular levels from the application of red and near infra-red light therapy. Laser light in the red and near-infrared spectrum reduces inflammation, provides analgesia, and most importantly, enhances repair/remodeling/regeneration of tissue. Wavelengths between 600nm and 1100nm are used in laser therapy. We use the Summus Horizon laser with diodes of four wavelengths, each with specific targets.
Therapuetic Effects
- Reduce Pain
- Reduce healing time by 30%- 50%
- Laser energy increases circulation, drawing water, oxygen, and nutrients to the damaged area
- The target for an effective laser treatment is not the pathology itself, but rather to stimulate the appropriate cell compartments that lead to the body’s natural repair mechanisms
Cellular Effects
- Cellular chromophores within the blood stream and the mitochondria absorb laser photons and the light energy is converted to chemical energy resulting in increased production of cellular energy (ATP)
- Accelerated Tissue Repair and Cell Growth
- Laser treatments modulate inflammation by causing vasodilation and activating the lymphatic drainage system.
